The-Dream Drops Misogynistic ‘Wake Me When It’s Over’ Video

the-dream, wake me when it's over

The-Dream is set to reissue his widely lauded, once-free 2011 mixtape 1977, for actual money, on December 18. Released under his birth name Terius Nash, the soul-baring set is widely considered to be a reaction to the PR&B O.G.’s divorce from singer/actress Christina Milian, and the lyrics found therein are pretty brutal when it comes to breakups. Consider early taste “Wake Me When It’s Over,” which finds Nash caught up in the tail-end tangle of a fast-failing relationship. Though he takes some responsibility for cheating on his mate, he seems to fault her even more for not being cool about his indiscretions, going as far as to sing, “Tried to keep it hush for you, keep it on the low / Tried to spare your feelings girl, shut the door.”

If that’s not enough shocking misogyny for you, consider the just-released video for that same song. The-Dream and whoever directed (smart to stay anonymous) take things way too far, depicting that same moment, it seems, when Nash’s significant other discovers that he’s unfaithful. They fight, he leaves, she follows, he turns her away, and then she goes on a date. Horrifically, she winds up getting raped by her new suitor, and when it’s over, she calls up The-Dream, begging for help. Quite a turn-around from last week’s “Tender Tendencies” bonus track, in which the guy showed some genuine remorse over his apparently insurmountable bad habits.
