Trent Reznor Will Appear on New Queens of the Stone Age Album

Trent Reznor Reddit AMA Queens of the Stone Age Album

Trent Reznor went on Reddit today for an Ask Me Anything (AMA) session with his fans that revealed not only the Nine Inch Nails and How to Destroy Angels main brain’s sense of humor, but a few newsworthy tidbits as well. At the top of the list: He’s working with Josh Homme on a song for the new Queens of the Stone Age album featuring Dave Grohl. Oh, and it looks like there’s a NIN tour coming in 2013. Also, the HTDA album will be coming next spring. Hold onto your virtual butts.

1) What he’s up to: “A number of things. Tweaking some things for the HTDA full LP (coming in Spring), helping Josh out on a new QOTSA track, working with Roy [Bennett, NIN tour producer], starting rehearsals for two bands.” [Italics denote Nine Inch Nails hint number one.]

2) On NIN’s impressive live lighting setups: “I spend a lot of time and energy thinking about how music is presented live. ‘Lights in the Sky’ was probably my favorite live show I’ve worked on so far. This was a real collaboration between myself, Rob [Sheridan, art director], Roy Bennett, and Moment Factory. We set out to make an experience and I really felt proud to put that on every night. Cryptic additional comment: 2013.” [Italics denote Nine Inch Nails hint number two.]

3) On working with his wife, Mariqueen Maandig, for HTDA, instead of NIN:
“She’s a better kisser.”

4) On the HTDA song, “Ice Age,” and the upcoming LP: “We were experimenting around with the juxtaposition of something familiar and almost folky sounding sitting in a very cold and sterile environment. Mariqueen had this melody that would have been happy living in a Fleetwood Mac record, and we created this plucky accompaniment that sounded acoustic but was anything but. Then we put all that in the freezer. The full record expands the boundaries of the EP a bit more.”

5) The status of The Fragile‘s pending surround sound reissue: “The 5.1 mixes are done and sound amazing. Alan [Moulder, producer] was the only person who could have possibly done it, and he did not disappoint. There are a couple other elements involved that we want to get right before we put this into production. These involve packaging and additional content. Patience, my friends.”

6) The status of the Year Zero HBO miniseries rumored since 2010: “This is currently in a holding state. We didn’t find the right match with a writer, and really have been avoiding doing what we should have done from the beginning: write it ourselves. We = Rob and myself. This project means a lot to me and will see the light of day in one form or another.”

7) On unrealized promotional stunts for Year Zero: “Several ideas came up, including blowing up a building, actually incarcerating fans, and staging an appearance of the Presence in real life. Can’t win em all.”

8) The inspiration for NIN’s “Halo” catalog numbering system: “I remember Depeche Mode did a similar thing and I thought it was cool. Somebody please remind me what the word Depeche Mode used was, I’m too old to remember what it was.” [Answer: “Bong.”]

9) His response to a fan bemoaning Reznor’s return to the major label system: “Poop.”

10) Can he disclose any future plans for Nine Inch Nails? “Sure I could.”

[For which he was dubbed, “Troll Reznor.”]
