See the Babies Do Karaoke in Lo-Fi ‘Baby’ Video
Gloomy yet swoony surf-pop from Cassie Ramone
Vivian Girls have generated what feels like an entire universe of offshoot acts, so it’s fitting that frontwoman Cassie Ramone’s other band is called the Babies. She founded the project a few years ago with Woods man Kevin Morby in order to “trade song ideas and play house parties.” But the project has come of age since, as evidenced by November’s Our House on the Hill LP and its jangly first single, “Moonlight Mile.” Now we’ve got a video for “Baby,” a gloomy yet swoony surf-pop number whose contrasting attributes are highlighted in the new Timothy Fiore-directed clip. Ramone stands alone in a dark room, the rest of the band nowhere to be seen, as she sings her lyrics from a karaoke screen. “You gotta come around now,” she pleads as a projected palm tree sways behind her. Under the lonely circumstances, it’s hard not to want to take the line literally.
