Soundgarden’s first new album in 16 years, King Animal, is out today, but the mega-selling rockers haven’t forgotten their pre-“alternative” roots. Last night during the TV broadcast of Late Show With David Letterman, the band gave an appropriately ferocious performance of saber-toothed new single “Been Away Too Long” (above). But the reunited beasts also played a one-hour online Live on Letterman show, which you can watch in full below. Though the 10-song set understandably leaned heavily on new material, Soundgarden also favored ’90s CD buyers with Superunknown‘s lurching radio hit “Fell on Black Days” — and treated true diehards to two songs from 1988 SST debut Ultramega OK, “Incessant Mase” and “Beyond the Wheel.” They’ve been away, but they weren’t gone for good.
