Green Day, Feist, St. Vincent Set for Final ‘Twilight’ Soundtrack

Though any supposed divide between literature and popular fiction has long since been exposed as arbitrary and pretentious, the Twilight movies continue to garner soundtrack rosters whose critical acclaim and collegiate appeal bely the books’ perhaps undeserved guilty-pleasure image. Beck and Bat for Lashes, Bon Iver and St. Vincent, Grizzly Bear and Beach House’s Victoria LeGrand, Florence and the Machine: All have appeared on Twilight movie soundtracks, along with Thom Yorke, Death Cab for Cutie, Metric, the Dead Weather, the Black Keys, Lykke Li, and many others. That’s largely thanks to music supervisor Alexandra Patsavas, who previously worked on The O.C., Gossip Girl, and Grey’s Anatomy.

Due out on November 13, the soundtrack to The Twilight Saga: Breaking Dawn – Part 2 is no exception, as revealed by Yahoo! Movies. Again overseen by Patsavas, the latest Twilight music includes a new song by Green Day, “The Forgotten,” which Green Day Authority says will appear on the band’s album ¡Tre! in January. Original material from Feist, St. Vincent, Ellie Goulding, Passion Pit, and POP ETC (formerly the Morning Benders) is also on the tracklist.

Green Day might not strike you as obvious “Twihards,” but Yahoo! points out that Billie Joe Armstrong once said he’d want the movies’ Edward, actor Robert Pattinson, to play the lead if the band’s American Idiot were ever to jump from Broadway to Hollywood. And bass player Mike Dirnt told Yahoo! the group had no hesitation at all about their involvement. “When we were asked to be part of the ‘Twilight: Breaking Dawn – Part 2’ soundtrack, we readily agreed because the films are an insane cultural phenomenon,” he’s quoted as saying, “and we have always been impressed with the way the ‘Twilight’ soundtracks are so carefully curated.”

Though Armstrong recently ranted his way to rehab, Green Day’s ¡Uno! debuted on the charts at No. 2 behind the all-powerful Mumford & Sons. The next album in Green Day’s planned trilogy, ¡Dos!, is due out on November 13, and a snippet of hard-hitting new track “Lazy Bones” has already hit the Web. ¡Tre! follows on January 15.
