Record Store Day’s New Black Friday Vinyl to Include Bowie, Beach Boys, Shins, Skrillex

Record Store Day Black Friday Vinyl List David Bowie

With a successful April Record Store Day behind them — “over 300 special releases, and over a million people who turned out,” plus a 26.6 percent sales bump for indie music shops overall — the blessed limited vinyl-vending event’s organizers have announced “Back to Black Friday,” their third post-Thanksgiving installment in as many years.

What’s more, they’ve shared the entire drool-inducing list of new goodies, which includes everything from the David Bowie “The Jean Genie” picture disc shown above, to 3,000-run copies of each of Skrillex’s three EPs, to the new Tomahawk 7-inch single we reported on weeks ago.

For the classicists: a Beach Boys 10-inch that pairs their first single, “Surfin’ Safari,” with their latest, “Isn’t It Time”; a Bob Dylan 7-inch that features an alt take on “Meet Me in the Morning”; a numbered run of The Velvet Underground and Nico, with early versions; the rare yet-unreleased live Grateful Dead recording; and a Christmas set that features blues legends such as Bessie Smith and Sonny Boy Williams.

For the rest of us: a Shins 7-inch with versions of “No Way Down” and “Fall of ’82” reimagined by producer Richard Swift; an etched 12-inch version of Dr. Dog’s new Wild Race EP; the Sonic Ranch Sessions from Band of Horses; a Mayer Hawthorne radio session 10-inch; Daniel Johnston’s Fun LP available on vinyl for the first time; M83 remixes; and 7-inches by JEFF the Brotherhood, White Stripes, and Toro Y Moi.

Of course, that’s a small sampling. Old school rap entries from Biz Markie and Fat Boys stand out, as well as a 20th anniversary reissue of Nirvana’s Insesticide compilation and a split 7-inch featuring Leonard Cohen and Jeff Buckley each doing “Hallelujah.” The latter, of course, is a sentiment we’d have to echo after reading the entire list.
