Watch Radiohead’s Forward-Leaning ‘Austin City Limits’ Episode

Radiohead's Thom Yorke on 'Austin City Limits'

Radiohead’s breakthrough single “Creep” turned 20 years old last month, which means yesterday, on October 7, frontman Thom Yorke turned 44. A day earlier, on Saturday, PBS kicked off a new season Austin City Limits with a nearly hour-long set by the band. Shot way back in March, the episode documents Radiohead as many saw them this year, taut and confident, with Yorke’s ponytailed gyrations at center stage.

The show included a new song the band debuted on their latest tour (“Identikit”), two The King of Limbs outtakes the band released 14 months ago as twin sides of a non-album single (“The Daily Mail”/”Staircase”), and an Amnesiac-era B-side that made its live debut one night earlier in Austin (“The Amazing Sounds of Orgy”). The set ended with its oldest song, OK Computer‘s multipart suite “Paranoid Android,” signaling that the band once associated with the cracked post-U2 anthems of 1995’s The Bends have their eyes fixed on their more recent legacy — and whatever comes next.

ACL brings out another falsetto-wielding art-rocker this coming Saturday, October 13, with an episode featuring Bon Iver. Also on deck this season: a split bill of Bonnie Raitt and Mavis Staples, plus episodes featuring the Shins, the Civil Wars, and more. Austin ought to be a busy place this weekend, as the Austin City Limits festival kicks off, with Black Keys, Red Hot Chili Peppers, Neil Young, Jack White, and many more (check out our five most wrenching set-time conflicts).

In other Radiohead-related devlopments, ‘head producer Nigel Godrich’s new group Ultraísta are holding a remix competition, as FACT reports. Download the stems below for the band’s “Bad Insect,” and then upload your remixed version to the Godrich-led project’s Dropbox. The band will choose the winner, whose remix will go out across the band’s social networks. The prize also includes a free Soundcloud pro account. The deadline is November 4.
