Of Montreal Improve Football in Trippily NSFW ‘Sails, Hermaphroditic’ Video

Of Montreal's "Sails, Hermaphroditic"

Between the NFL’s head injury tragedies and the official sanctions against some of college football’s better teams, it’s a tough year to be a pigskin fan. Luckily, the game’s problems are nothing a little psychedelically enhanced sex and violence can’t fix, as Of Montreal discover in the new video for Funkenstein-popper “Sails, Hermaphroditic.”

From the Elephant Six group’s brand-new rarities collection Daughters of Cloud, the wild, kaleidoscopic song gets equally wild, kaleidoscopic visuals that involve, as frontman Kevin Barnes is quoted as saying, “two rival gangs, the Sleep Rats and the Preppy Scuz,” who play football in the Deep South only to lose themselves in gore and druggy eroticism (there’s blood and light nudity, if you’re somewhere where you’re concerned about that kind of thing).

Barnes’ wife Nina directs the attention-grabbing clip, which ends — here’s Kevin again — with “a gonzo performance by the legendary Newcastle hair-metal band Moat-er-Wilde.” Legendary indeed. Now, who knows a good mnemonic device to keep track of which teams are in the Big 10’s “Legends” and “Leaders” divisions?
