Fiona Apple Writes ‘Dull Tool’ for Judd Apatow’s ‘This Is 40’

Fiona Apple Judd Apatow This Is 40

Fiona Apple has written a song for Judd Apatow’s upcoming Knocked Up spinoff, This Is 40. As Huffington Post reports, Universal Pictures has updated their Academy Awards site and included her unheard “Dull Tool” amongst its entries for Best Original Song.

Though Apple’s 2000 single “Paper Bag” appeared in Apatow’s Bridesmaids last year, this will be her first time penning something unique for the silver screen. She previously covered John Lennon’s “Across the Universe” for 1998’s Pleasantville, and “Sally’s Song” for a bonus disc from The Nightmare Before Christmas soundtrack’s 2006 reissue.

It no doubt helps that her frequent collaborator Jon Brion (When the Pawn…, the bootleg version of Extraordinary Machine) is providing This Is 40‘s at times Apple-esque score, clips of which can be heard at the aforementioned Universal site.

The film hits theaters on December 21. Watch the trailer below, featuring the Strokes’ “You Only Live Once,” Mozella’s “Unplug,” and George Harrison’s “What Is Life.”
