Death From Above 1979 New Songs Tour

SPIN has been faithfully following Death From Above 1979’s barn-storming reunion rounds ever since the spaz-punk destroyers reappeared last year. Their well-received run of festival appearances — Austin City Limits, Sasquatch, SXSW, Lollapalooza — saw the duo playing from their only album, 2004’s excellent You’re a Woman, I’m a Machine, but last night DFA debuted a handful of new songs for their Canadian tour kickoff in Ontario.

Last month on the band’s blog, drummer/singer Sebastien Granger announced that fresh material was indeed on its way, saying, “Jesse [F. Keeler] and I have been writing new songs and the only way we feel like we can make them any good is to go out and play them for people. We’re going to throw our little muscle bound babies to the lions and see who survives. We tried just jumping into the studio, but the songs lacked spirit. They lacked life.”

Granger went on to call the tour their “song CPR.” Fitting, considering that Death From Above 1979 seemed genuinely deceased when Keeler announced the split in 2006 by saying, “We both changed so much that the people we were by the end of it probably wouldn’t have been friends if they were to meet for the first time again.” But Granger’s new ‘tude seems genuinely hopeful: “We’re a band, and bands just work it out together.”

The YouTube clips for two new songs plus an “ENCORE FINAL JAM” were originally rounded up by Consequence of Sound. Download the audio, rough as it is, over at You Ain’t No Picasso or take a trip to Canuck country to catch the chaos in person via the dates posted below.
