Who’s BFF with BFF? Flaming Lips frontman Wayne Coyne and electropop partygirl Ke$ha are! The two joined Ben Folds Five onstage last night at Nashville’s storied Ryman Auditorium, as the trio, fresh out of retirement, wended their way across the country in support of their first album in 13 years, The Sound of the Live of the Mind.

Lead singer Ben Folds admitted to “shitting himself” with excitement before the odd couple materialized mid show for Conway Twitty and Loretta Lynn’s jokey duet-a-tete “You’re the Reason Our Kids Are Ugly.” Coyne, in a lime green suit, traded lyrical barbs with the white-girl-rapper, who sung out her part with uncharacteristic brio. “She’s a great talent. She’s gonna be around for a long time,” Folds reportedly said as the pair exited the stage.

Coyne and Ke$ha are all about collaborating these days. The “Tik Tok” singer appeared on the Lips’ Record Store Day release, Heady Fwends, for the Doctor Who-sampling track “2012 (You Must Be Upgraded).” And both Coyne and Folds weighed in on new material for the pop star’s TBD sophomore LP.
