ANDREI TARKOVSKY

Andrei Tarkovsky / Photo by Getty ImagesThe greatest Russian filmmaker of the post-Eisenstein era, Tarkovsky’s films often dealt with themes of loss and regret (Solaris), memories (Mirror, Nostalghia), the marriage of art and religion (Andrei Rublev), and finding love in a hopeless place (Stalker). Watching a Tarkovsky film is more like witnessing the painting of a masterpiece; each languid scene a brushstroke, each sparse line of dialogue a dab at the palette, layer upon layer, to form an awing experience. Think of AnCo’s “Brothersport”: Lengthy, repetitive, short on words, mesmerizing, poignant.
