Florence Goes Electro (Again!): Hear Welch’s Calvin Harris Track

Florence Welch

Florence Welch might be better known for her gospel- and blues-infused pop-rock, but the Florence + the Machine belter is no stranger to electronic dance music. As SPIN’s Ellen Carpenter reported back in 2009, Welch even got her big break when she found herself singing in a London bathroom with one half of British DJ duo Queens of Noize. Scottish producer Calvin Harris, meanwhile, has been racking up chart-toppers like Rihanna’s “We Found Love” while David Guetta has been absorbing the bulk of aesthetes’ disapproval. A Harris-ized club remix of Florence + the Machine’s Ceremonials wailer “Spectrum” shot to No. 1 in the U.K., and now Welch has returned the favor by lending her booming vibrato to his “Sweet Nothing,” which premiered today on BBC Radio 1 (via ONTD).

An EDM-pop stomper about a lover who gives Welch, uh, “such sweet nothing,” it’s all but guaranteed to top the British charts again. If Welch really is taking a 12-month break from music before the next Machine album, as the NME quotes her telling Style magazine, it might be worth the empty calories to hear her powerful vocals again, though those pummeling drum-machine builds hit like the cavity creeps. Harris’ upcoming album 18 Months, due out on October 29, is also set to call on guest vocals from Rihanna, Kelis, Ellie Goulding, Dizzee Rascal, and Tinie Tempah.
