Listen to Nautiluss’ Laser-Focused ‘Sabbath’

You can wear your sunglasses at night if you want — won’t make a damn bit of difference, as they’re going to be all steamed up anyway. That’s the message that the Montreal scene-maker and one-time electro icon Tiga seems to be sending with the latest crop of releases on his Turbo Recordings imprint. Recent records from Sei A, Gesaffelstein and Gingy & Bordello have been tougher and more technoid than we’re accustomed to from the label that once brought us Chromeo’s cheerfull, Hall & Oates-indebted cheese; Nautiluss’ debut EP for Turbo is the toughest of the bunch. Nautiluss (Toronto’s Graham Zilla) used to play in the antic Thunderheist, and he also records more pop-oriented electronic dance music as Grahmzilla, but his Nautiluss project maintains a laser-like focus on dark, throbbing, sweat-soaked basement techno that’s as scary as it is sexy. “Sabbath,” the standout cut from his new four-track EP, pairs ominous arpeggios with metallic clatter and a mean, jacking groove; it goes down like a steel wool communion wafer.
