Levon Helm hosted many Midnight Ramble jam sessions at his upstate New York home, but his most famous musical partner will always be Bob Dylan. Last night the Bard added to the chorus of memorials on the web paying tribute to the onetime Band drummer, who succumbed to cancer at age 71 yesterday, posting a goodbye note on his website simply titled “In response to Levon’s passing” (via Billboard).

“He was my bosom buddy friend to the end, one of the last true great spirits of my or any other generation,” Dylan writes. “This is just so sad to talk about. I still can remember the first day I met him and the last day I saw him. We go back pretty far and had been through some trials together. I’m going to miss him, as I’m sure a whole lot of others will too.”
