SPIN contributing photographer Michael Schmelling shares his favorite images from a new book he co-edited and designed featuring hip-hop iconoclasts Odd Future's wild on- and offstage world.

1.Photograph Them All

1/18

Odd Future might be one of the more polarizing acts in pop music, but behind the endless controversy, leader Tyler, the Creator insists they're just "young, ignorant, and having fun." And he has photographic proof. Golf Wang, a new book featuring shots by the group (mostly plucked from their Tumblr) sandwiched between
images from a few pros, depicts the crew as goofy troublemakers with voracious appetites (mid-bite pics are popular) and stomachs unchurned by dead birds,
dying rats, and at least one cockroach that looks very much alive. "People might
listen to Odd Future's music and think that we are serious, mean, devil-worshipping people," Tyler writes in a forward to the book. "But these photos show us as who we really are."

Michael Schmelling, who co-edited the book with Nick Weidenfeld (formerly of Adult Swim), says the selections represent the group pre-fame, on the road, and bumming around their native Los Angeles. "We all just wanted to keep it as honest and simple and immediate as the Tumblr," Schmelling says. "I hope their sense of
humor shows through." ALYSSA NOEL
