Messes were made, speed-eating challenges were accepted, pickles were wrapped in bacon. Put on a bib and take a look.

1.Snack #1: A deviled egg sandwich from Bits & Druthers

1/13

"I love to eat," says Andrew W.K., "I do it three times a day." Well, then he's found himself in the right place in Austin. Ten years after the release of his manically upbeat party-metal debut, I Get Wet, W.K. was at SXSW to play shows, deliver a lecture, and, with our help, stuff himself silly. It can feel like there are almost as many food trucks as bands in the city during SXSW, and we did our best to patronize as many as we could, stopping by a grassy lot just east of the festival's core to chow down. Messes were made, speed-eating challenges were accepted, pickles were wrapped in bacon. Put on a bib and take a look. DAVID MARCHESE

Above: Though he's normally more of a "pizza and burgers" guy, Andrew was keen on trying a beer-battered fried haddock and a deviled egg sandwich from the Bits & Druthers fish and chip truck. The former won out. "The fish is nicely flaky and not dry, with lots of flavor. I love fried foods, and this didn't disappoint. The higher the caloric content the better."

3.Snack #2: Vegan "freeto pie"

3/13

"Vegan cuisine often suffers from a lack of flavor, but I find this quite enjoyable in a stripped-down way," said Andrew about this vegan "Freeto pie." "It's got sweet corn, the beans are firm, the corn chips add some crunch, and I always enjoy avocado." Our man washed this down with a coconut juice. "Nature's best hydration."

4.Snack #3: Coconut juice

4/13

Giving his gut a rest before we moved on to the next gustatory delight, Andrew expounded on his own cooking habits. "I'm more of a heater than a cooker. I enjoy heating up frozen dinners," he said. "I don't do much cooking beyond that. When I was growing up, my dad's specialty was pasta puttanesca. I didn't take after him, but I did try to make a grape cake not that long ago. It didn't turn out well."

5.Snack #4: Haddock sammie

5/13

"No pun intended: The tartar sauce is wonderfully tart," said Andrew about the haddock sammie's chief topping adding, "I can be a messy eater." You don't say.

6.Snack #5: Pepper sausage

6/13

Andrew and I attack a pepper sausage Lady and the Tramp-style. "It's better we bite from different ends," Andrew said. "I've got a variety of communicable diseases." As for the sausage? "It's got great snap to it."

7.Snack #6: The pork belly slider contest!

7/13

"Want to up the ante?" I asked Andrew. "Always," he replied. Thus: A speed-eating contest. Here, we psych ourselves up just prior to seeing which one of us could down a pork belly slider faster.

8.Pig out!

8/13

Andrew jumped out to an early lead.

9.David comes to life

9/13

My competitive juices kicked in, and I closed the gap. As you can see by the expressions on our faces, once we got the sliders in our respective maws and were focused solely on chewing, things got rough. I felt pretty gross at this point.

10.SPIN some, lose some

10/13

Marchese wins. Chewed and swallowed. "It's good that you won," said Andrew, gracious in defeat. "It would have seemed rigged if I'd beaten you."

11.Oink invite

11/13

Andrew pops his head in the punk-rock Pig Vicious bacon truck, run by Damon, left, and Bryce, right.

12.Snack #7: Bacon-wrapped pickles at Pig Vicious

12/13

Washing down some bacon-wrapped pickles with swigs of Old Crow bourbon. "So many different textures and flavors in a compact package," said Andrew of the finger-food. "The bacon has that salty animal fat taste, and the pickle is a solid dill."

13.Emperor Tomato Ketchup

13/13

Ten years down the line, Andrew and the Pig Vicious dudes re-create the I Get Wet album cover with the help of a some ketchup. "People have asked me to punch them in the face so that they could do the album cover," recalled Andrew, "but this is certainly the first time I've been asked to attempt it with a condiment."
