How the Kills Made Wrenching ‘Last Goodbye’ Video

For the most singular song in the Kills’ already scuzzily distinguished catalog, only the most singular video would do. A new making-of clip shows how the recently released 35mm photo booth video for “The Last Goodbye,” the somewhat Beach House-faded keyboard-ballad left turn from last year’s Blood Pressures, came to be. “Long story short, I just went from my heart, and that’s what they chose,” says Minority Report and In America actress Samantha Morton, who directed the Allen Ginsberg-inspired video. The making-of clip also includes interviews with blues-rock duo’s own Alison Mosshart and Jamie Hince.

The gorgeously affecting “The Last Goodbye” video comes as the Kills are celebrating their 10th anniversary as a band. In honor of the milestone, London video maker Giorgio Testi has put together a sumptuous mini-documentary about the band. “As soon as you play music, music’s playing you,” Mosshart says in the roughly six-minute clip. Find out why Mosshart likes to down a Red Bull and vodka before taking the stage, among other small but intimate revelations, below:

A song with the bittersweet nostalgia of “The Last Goodbye” and its video was made for the analog crackle of vinyl, as the Kills must keenly recognize. They’re putting it out as the fourth single from Blood Pressures. Out on February 14 as a digital download, the track will be available as a 7″ picture disc and 10″ EP on February 21. In keeping with the photobooth theme, pre-orders will come with a 16-page booklet of original photography by the duo, titled 144 Polaroids From The Road, while the 10″ will include covers of three fittingly weathered yet still revealing songs: the Velvet Underground’s “Pale Blue Eyes,” Marilyn Monroe’s “One Silver Dollar,” and Patsy Cline’s “Crazy.”
