All-star gigs featured guests Ozzy Osbourne, Lou Reed, Kid Rock, and former Metallica members Dave Mustaine and Jason Newsted

Metallica recently wrapped up their all-star 30th anniversary concerts at San Francisco’s Fillmore, and at the last of their intimate gigs they welcomed a pair of guests that helped write the definition of “heavy metal”: Black Sabbath’s Ozzy Osbourne and Geezer Butler. The recently reunited bandmates joined Metallica for “Iron Man” and “Paranoid,” the same two songs Black Sabbath performed with Metallica when the former were inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in 2006. Butler, sans Ozzy, also performed “Sabbra Cadabra” with Metallica, who previously covered the Sabbath Bloody Sabbath track on their Garage Inc.

As SPIN previously noted, at all of the fan club-only Fillmore shows, bassist Jason Newsted came onstage to perform some tracks from his time with band. On Saturday night though, Newsted wasn’t the only former member of Metallica to rejoin the band on the final night of their anniversary shows: Megadeth’s Dave Mustaine, who was fired by Metallica in 1983 after two years with the group, stopped by to perform three Kill ‘Em All tracks he co-wrote with James Hetfield and Lars Ulrich, “Phantom Lord,” “Jump in the Fire,” and “Metal Militia.”

Previously during the 30th anniversary gigs, Metallica were joined by guests as diverse as Marianne Faithfull, Glenn Danzig, Kid Rock (“Turn the Page”), producer Bob Rock, Alice in Chains’ Jerry Cantrell, Judas Priest’s Rob Halford, Lynyrd Skynyrd’s Gary Rossington (“Tuesday’s Gone”), King Diamond, and their Lulu co-conspirator Lou Reed.

Tickets for the anniversary gigs at the Fillmore were available only to Metallica’s fan club (for $6 apiece!), so for all those millions of fans that couldn’t get in, the band has posted a 27-minute video showing all the highlights from the gigs. Plus, SPIN has assembled the best all-star appearances from the concerts, including Ozzy, Danzig, and more:
