Lou Reed, Metallica’s Next Victim: Darren Aronofsky

Lou Reed and Metallica released their new collaborative album, Lulu, on Tuesday, but the record’s strangely gripping saga refuses to end. The avant-garde rocker and the heavy-metal titans previously roped in Dutch director Anton Corbijn, a longtime Metallica associate, who took promotional photos for the album. Now comes word that Loutallica have tapped filmmaker Darren Aronofsky to direct a video for Lulu cut “Iced Honey” (via the Associated Press).

Aronofsky is the director of Academy Award-nominated films Black Swan, The Wrestler, and Requiem for a Dream — facts apparently not lost on Reed, who told the AP he hopes the video “can be his next Black Swan.” Metallica drummer Lars Ulrich is quoted as describing the collaboration with Reed and Aronofsky as “living the dream,” calling Aronofsky “among my very favorite filmmakers.” Aronofsky should have his work cut out for him — “Iced Honey,” while not necessarily the worst cut on Lulu, is, as a drearily plodding mid-tempo rocker with little about it that might offend middle America, perhaps one of its more forgettable. “Instead of hello, you say, ‘So long,’ ” Reed rants. Here’s a response from Black Swan‘s Thomas Leroy: “The only person standing in your way is you.”
