Over the weekend, Drake unveiled the video for “Headlines,” which the Toronto rapper-singer has previously called the first single from sophomore album Take Care (out October 24). Watch it below.
Posted on Drake’s October’s Very Own blog, the clip finally shows the perpetually conflicted star finally appearing to enjoy his success — well, at least a little bit. Backed by imperial-style columns, standing in a vast but empty stadium, or chewing a stogie on the escalator at a high-rise office building, Drake looks every bit a leader, and he has a crew of solemn-faced men to back him up.
From the follow-up to smash debut Thank Me Later, “Headlines” is a skittering, string-pulsing rumination on fame, produced by frequent collaborators Noah “Boi-1da” Samuels and Noah “40” Shebib. “I know I exaggerated things,” Drake says, in a sing-song cadence. “Now I got it like that.”
Other recent Drake tracks likely to appear on Take Care include the drunk-dial brooder “Marvin’s Room,” along with similarly downcast “Trust Issues” — which refers to Drake’s verse on DJ Khaled’s “I’m on One” — and the striving, massively confident “Dreams Money Can Buy,” which samples the foul-mouthed falsetto from London producer Jai Paul’s “BTSTU.” More recently, Drake alaso posted the woozy “Club Paradise,” the Rick Ross-featuring “Free Spirit,” and a remix of Waka Flocka Flame’s “Round of Applause.”
