Rolling Stones Dig Up Old Single for ‘Some Girls’ Reissue

The Rolling Stones could hardly have picked a more paradoxical first single for their upcoming reissue of classic 1978 album Some Girls. Raiding the archives for spare parts, they’ve come up with the bittersweet country-rocker “No Spare Parts,” a previously unreleased track that made its worldwide debut today on BBC Radio 2 — hear it here (fast-forward to about the two-hour, five-minute mark). And… well, it’s country Stones, with road-weary verses and a chorus that compares a broken heart to an engine you just can’t fix. Fans of “Wild Horses” or “Far Away Eyes” should be pleased.

Then again, many of them might’ve heard this song already — a version has been on YouTube — and on Stones bootlegs — for years. The sound quality here is vastly improved, however, the song is much more concise, and some of the lyrics are totally different.

Mick Jagger drawls and plays electric piano, Keith Richards plays acoustic piano, Ron Woods gets that pedal steel guitar to weep plaintively, while drummer Charlie Watts and bassist Bill Wyman make up the honky-tonk rhythm section. The Some Girls deluxe and super-deluxe editions arrive on November 21; check out the track list here.
