WATCH: Stephen Malkmus Plays New Song

Stephen Malkmus and his band the Jicks recently held a contest soliciting an FCC-approved substitution for the phrase “blow job” in their song “Senator.” The winner, Malkmus announced during an in-store gig at Los Angeles’ Amoeba Records (watch!), is “corn dog,” and Tuesday night the quartet played the censored version on Late Night With Jimmy Fallon. They also performed a version of a never-before-heard track called “Surreal Teenagers.” Watch both here.

“Senator” is the first single from Malkmus’ just released Beck-produced album Mirror Traffic, while “Surreal Teenagers” is a prog-tinged jam reminiscent of Malkmus’ last album, the guitar hero collection Real Emotion Trash.

In a recent interview with SPIN, Malkmus discussed the meaning of “Senator”: “To me, it’s really just a metaphor. The senator could be me or any singer in a band, anyone that’s trying to hang in there. Anyone that’s trying to stay in office and do whatever they can do to get votes. They’ll say whatever they can. Democrat or republican, they want to stay in office more than anything.”

Stephen Malkmus and the Jicks hit the road this fall on a month-long North American tour, kicking off September 20 in Detroit. See dates here.
