Hear Previously Unreleased New Order Song

This June, Rhino Records UK will release Total, the first hits compilation to combine both the music of Joy Division and its offshoot band New Order. The collection features some of their best known tunes – including Joy Division’s classic “Love Will Tear Us Apart” and New Order’s “Blue Monday” – but the big news about the 18-track set is the inclusion of a previously unreleased New Order song titled “Hellbent,” which has just hit the web. Hear it here.

New Order, “Hellbent”

New Order – who formed after the death of Joy Division’s Ian Curtis on May 18, 1980, 31 years ago today – haven’t revealed details about when the song was recorded, but the gospel backup singers and crisp, modern production suggest it was cut around the time of 2005’s Waiting for the Sirens’ Call.

Does the release of a greatest hits collection mean New Order, who split in 2007, might be getting back together? Not likely. Bernard Sumner has kept busy working with new act Bad Lieutenant, while bassist Peter Hook has taken to performing Joy Division’s music on his own.

No U.S. release is planned yet for Total.
