The Shins Return, Lennon Lyrics on Auction + More

  • The Shins have been added to this year’s Outside Lands festival, marking the band’s return to live performance for the first time since 2009. James Mercer and Co. will join previously announced headliners Arcade Fire, Muse, and Phish. The festival takes place in San Francisco’s Golden Gate Park from August 12-14. [Outside Lands]

  • Handwritten lyrics by John Lennon for the Beatles 1967 classic “Lucy in the Sky With Diamonds” have hit the auction block. The item, which also includes a rough sketch of four people in a room drawn by Lennon, is expected to fetch more than $200,000 when it goes up for sale next month. [Billboard]

  • Spotify, the popular European music streaming service that is set to come to the U.S. soon, has overhauled its free stream-what-you-want policy. Among the changes: users can now listen to a track up to five times in total, and total listening time has been reduced from 20 hours per month to 10. Additional listens will require users to upgrade to an Unlimited or Premium account. The move is seen as Spotify’s way of appealing to major labels, who have been turned off by its “freemium” model, as it looks to open up in the States. [Billboard]

  • Brazilian dance-rock band CSS will return with a new album La Liberación, set to be released on August 29. The disc features collaborations with Ratatat and will be the band’s first album since leaving longtime home Sub Pop for V2 Music, according to a press release.

  • Shout! Factory will release a DVD of a 2010 tribute concert to Neil Young on May 31. MusiCares Tribute to Neil Young includes top artists like Neko Case, Elvis Costello, Wilco, Norah Jones, and others covering Young’s songs; sales of the item will benefit Musicares, which raises money for musicians in need.
