Meat Puppets, ‘Lollipop’ (Megaforce)

“I could probably do it better,” admits frontman Curt Kirkwood at the end of “The Spider and the Spaceship,” the acoustic sci-fi country ditty that concludes this re-reunited trio’s 13th studio album. Half-baked has always been the Meat Puppets’ manner, though, and hallucinatory glimpses of wasted strangeness consistently shine through Kirkwood’s flat vocal affect and uniquely bracing guitar stratification. How strange? “I try to slap the face of an alien,” he ventures in “Amazing,” one of several compact yet sneakily hypnotic dispatches from the fringe.
