Terrific Twitter Trio of the Week

110106-twitter-trio.jpg

Lots of musicians tweet — but all that Twitters is not gold.

That’s why you’ll want to check out SPIN.com every Friday to see whose tweets we’re reading this week — then update your TweetDeck! (Obligatory Self-Promotion: …while you’re at it, be sure to follow @SPINmagazine!)

This week’s winners:

  • Best Coast’s Ali Koehler
    @hernameisali

    Why You Should Follow: We’ve been longtime fans of Best Coast frontwoman Bethany Cosentino’s tweets — not to mention those of her constant companion (and indie rock mascot), Snacks the Cat. But drummer Ali Koehler, a former member of Vivian Girls who joined the band this past summer, is also entertaining to follow on Twitter. She posts amazing Twitpics of glitzy times in Las Vegas, late-night adventures with friends, backstage pizza and Jim Beam, cool new tattoos (she got this pumpkin to celebrate the first day of fall), and Christmas storytelling sessions (this one was taken while her friends were listening to her dad talk about taking peyote at a Grateful Dead concert in 1972). She’s also wickedly funny, whether she’s tweeting about smoking weed in Puerto Rico, getting stuck in traffic in L.A., or any number of TMI topics (“Literally just pulled a piece of my circulatory system outta my nose. #whennosepickinggoeswrong”). Follow her for a taste of life on the road with one of the most fun touring bands around.

    Best Tweet of the Week: “First tv appearance done! I’m still shaking but the dude who screamed ‘I wish Bethany was my girlfriend!’ b4 we played eased the nerves.”

  • …And You Will Know Us By the Trail of Dead
    @realtrailofdead

    Why You Should Follow: These psychedelic rockers have a big year ahead. Their seventh album, Tao of the Dead, which was reportedly recorded in only 10 days, will be released in February, and the band just announced plans to hit the road with Surfer Blood for a 13-date North American tour in April. If you can’t make it to one of their shows, tune in to their Twitter feed instead — their utterly random updates should give you a feel of what it’s like to travel with these guys. Sometimes thoughtful (“what ever happened to the love? frakk’n world is one big harsh toke”), sometimes ridiculous (“Hey… I just quit crack!”), their tweets are few and far between but always interesting to read. Warning: They sometimes like to play pranks on their followers — a few months ago, they pretended that Kanye was sampling one of their tracks for his latest album — so remain skeptical at all times.

    Best Tweet of the Week: After sending out props to a bunch of friends, musical inspirations, they tweeted, “We have never thrown the props tweet out till now!!! How newbie of us!”

  • The Knux
    @TheKnuX

    Why You Should Follow: This alternative hip-hop duo has declared 2011 as “the return of sex, drugs, and rock ‘n’ roll,” and on Twitter, they’re doing everything they can to set the mood. After all, as they tweeted recently, “You only live once …. (said in dramatic slow motion).” So why not “fuck the fuckery” (their words, once again) and have some fun? They’re constantly advising their followers to “burn something” or “blow something” (yes, that means what you think) or to drop everything and enjoy a little #PizzaTime. If you’re a Knux fan, go ahead and tweet at them — they’re known for re-tweeting the funny things their fans say to them on Twitter (and tweeting back if you’re lucky). They once tweeted “If theres a stage, we will entertain…” — and Twitter is their online stage.

    Best Tweet of the Week: “We bout to punch ya’ll in the nose with this new shit !!!!!!!!!!!!!”
