Deerhoof, ‘Deerhoof vs. Evil’ (Polyvinyl)

With an adversarial album title and lyrics sprinkled with wartime imagery, the 11th record from these Bay Area artistes seems inspired by global conflict. But the band’s treatment of this weighty theme produces songs with titles like “Hey I Can,” which features a verse with the words “I can,” “love,” and “fun” chirped by Satomi Matsuzaki ten or so times each. Deerhoof’s trademark guitar-noise scribbling has been transformed in the studio, resulting in bulky, segmented yet hummable compositions that signify — we think — the triumph of cutesy creativity over grouchiness.
