Teengirl Fantasy, ‘7 AM’ (True Panther)

SPIN Rating: 7 of 10

Instrumental electronica albums usually aren’t known for their storytelling, but this debut from two Ohio dorm buddies plays like an actual compelling narrative. Opener “Vibes” enters in a primordial mist pocked by wristwatch clicks and ping-pong percussion that, by song’s end, coalesce into half-time Hi-NRG mortar hail. Afterwards, it’s a soft-focus voyage past a series of dance-music landmarks, until sampled vocals from Love Committee’s “Cheaters Never Win” get beamed in, at which point the frothy beats exalt the awesome power of disco testifying and the duo, seemingly chastened, arrange a careful, morning-after comedown.
