During the recent Virgin Mobile FreeFest in Maryland, bands stopped by the American Express® ZYNC ZONE to chat with SPIN about their summer festival experiences and much more, among them Arizona rockers Jimmy Eat World — watch our video interview, plus performance footage below!

The band played FreeFest on the eve of the release of Invented, their seventh album, and they rolled out some new songs for the crowd. “As a musician, you’re always more excited about the newest thing you just did, so we’re really happy to be out playing new songs,” frontman Jim Adkins told SPIN. “The response from the new songs has been pretty good.”

Invented finds Jimmy Eat World reuniting with producer Mark Trombino, who helmed three of the band’s seminal albums, including 1999’s classic Clarity and their 2001 breakthrough Bleed American. “It was important for us to bring someone in like Mark,” said drummer Zach Lind. “You need honesty, someone to reflect back accurately what’s going on.” Added Atkins: “A lot of bad records have been made by producers who don’t say no.”
