Bear in Heaven, ‘Beast Rest Forth Mouth (Expanded Edition)’ (Hometapes)

Do we really need another impressionistic Brooklyn “Bear” ensemble with pained tenor cries and prog-rock tendencies? Beast Rest Forth Mouth makes an exuberant case, folding thunderous krautrock drones, shoegaze guitar symphonies, cosmic disco synths, and off-kilter live drums into a tweaked-for-days soundscape that initially overwhelms but soon delivers a psych-pop payoff, particularly on self-descriptive single “Lovesick Teenagers.” Now released with a remix album featuring reimaginings of each track by the Field, Studio, and other wayward travelers, this is the rare indie buzz record that’s both sexy and spiritual.
