Superpitcher, ‘Kilimanjaro’ (Kompakt)

Long the poster boy for techno’s New Romantic faction, Aksel “Superpitcher” Schaufler emerges as an eccentric dandy on his first solo album in six years. Drinking in Depeche Mode, Grace Jones, and even Pink Floyd, his lush, moody beats blossom into wayward disco pop. From the nursery-rhyme dub of “Voodoo” to the paranoid slip and slide of “Rabbits in a Hurry,” he knows the importance of a good hook and a better synth patch. But these idiosyncratic tracks, each suggesting its own world, point to a universe that exists far beyond the dance floor.
