Jaill, ‘That’s How We Burn’ (Sub Pop)

These four Milwaukee dudes mix the beaming choruses of ’80s new wave with the lovable shrug of ’90s guitar-based indie-nice-guy party rock somewhere between a less excitable Hold Steady and a more distortion-crazed Violent Femmes. But what elevates their debut beyond your average twee-punk rager is the gentle psych dabblings: extra delay on a guitar solo, an errant “ooh-ahh-ooh,” a dubby Panda Bear flourish, and the swirling noise that murmurs through the background of the cheerful “Snake Shakes.”
