Drake Visits Studio with Chris Brown

In the wake of R&B star Chris Brown’s moving BET Awards show tribute to Michael Jackson on Sunday night, he and chart-topping rapper Drake may have found common ground over their shared history with Rihanna.

“I’ve been working all night,” Drake told TV’s Extra on Tuesday (via Rap-Up). “I’ve just been in the studio. I was actually in the studio with Chris Brown for a little bit.”

Although Drake didn’t give and specific details about a possible collaboration, it’s a surprising turn considering Brown’s public disdain for the close friendship — and rumored romance — that blossomed between Rihanna and Drake after his own relationship with the “Disturbia” singer imploded in the wake of their Grammy night altercation in February 2009. Brown plead guilty to a felony assault charge in June.

Brown addressed Drake by name in a song called “Famous Girl,” released in December 2009, which included the following line, among various barbs aimed at Rihanna: “Drake would say that you’re the best he ever had. Rumors come and go but you keep a shadow. Everywhere you go it follows.”

But while Rihanna was once a point of contention between the two young men, now she may be the very thing that brings them together: Like Brown, Drake also regrets his relationship with the Barbadian pop star, for whom he wrote a song that she never released.

“I was a pawn,” Drake told the New York Times earlier this month. “You know what she was doing to me? She was doing exactly what I’ve done to so many women throughout my life, which is show them quality time, then disappear. I was like, wow, this feels terrible.”

Drake, whose debut album bowed at No. 1 last week, is just one of a growing number of stars in the hip-hop and R&B scenes that have reached out to Brown after his emotional, career-saving appearance at the BET Awards, where he broke down in tears after paying tribute to Michael Jackson. According to Rap-Up, Keri Hilson, Mario, Queen Latifah, Cassie, and Lloyd are among those who’ve been gushing about Brown this week.
