Sacramento, CA, alt-metal quintet Deftones experiment with symbolic lyrics on their sixth studio album, Diamond Eyes (out May 4) and the new video for the title track has plenty of enigmatic imagery to match. Watch “Diamond Eyes” below!
“I love songs where I can totally take myself out of being human,” Moreno recently told SPIN.comabout the new album. “I can sing about really oddthings, and they don’t necessarily have to pertain to me at all. Itpaints a picture. Those are the kind of lyrics I grew up with — likethe Cure. Really visual images and no storytelling.”
The clip finds the band rocking out on an eerie black soundstage as tiny pieces of broken glass float around lead singer Chino Moreno; a snow-white owl and redheaded priestess complete the esoteric scene. In the last few seconds of the video, the formerly melodic metal song busts wide open, as each thrashing guitar riff methodically shatters huge chunks of glass.
Diamond Eyes is the first Deftones release since the 2008 car accident that critically injured bassist Chi Cheng, who is still recovering in a Northern California hospital. The band decided to scrap material they had recorded up to that point and start over from scratch. Former Quicksand bassist Sergio Vega subsequently stepped in; he appears in the new video.
