Harlem, ‘Hippies’ (Matador)

The latest act injecting modern vulgarity into 1960s garage rock come off as cuddly cousins of the Black Lips and King Khan. Over “Sleep Walk” shuffling, this Austin trio sing about an ex burning alive on “Someday Soon,” but they’re not gruesome about it, see. Which is good: With 16 tracks of scratchy vocals and scratchier guitars, Hippies has enough aw-shucks moments (“I love all the people, most of all I love you,” goes one gooey lyric) to keep Harlem from sounding too much like a knockoff of the knockoffs.
