Gogol Bordello, ‘Trans-Continental Hustle’ (American)

“And may the sound of our contaminated beat / Sweep all the Nazi purists off their feet,” declares Eugene Hütz in the title track of the sixth album by these raving cosmopolitan punks. Hütz now lives in Brazil, and the region’s rhythms infect even traditional Romani songs like “Pala Tute” on this Rick Rubin (under)production. It’s no Super Taranta!, but Hütz’s minor-key odes to erotic revolution and cosmic evolution still pack a heady, sweaty punch. Who else could condense Gypsy history into a single verse (“Break the Spell”)?
