WATCH: Fanfarlo Play Acoustic at SPIN HQ

Fanfarlo may be the most unique band coming out of the U.K. right now.

The indie-pop sextet’s melancholy, hyper-literate sound (they’re even named after a Baudelaire novella) earned them a spot as a Hot New Band in SPIN’s November ’09 issue, and their tune “Ghosts” was featured on an episode of Grey’s Anatomy. Taking time off from their latest U.S. trek, lead singer/songwriter Simon Balthazar and multi-instrumentalist Cathy Lucas dropped by SPIN HQ to play four songs acoustic.

The duo performed “Drowning Men” and “Comets,” both from the band’s 2009 debut Reservoir, plus two others from their repertoire: new track “Atlas” and a cover of Bonnie Prince Billy’s “A Minor Place.” Before kicking into the forlorn “Comets,” Balthazar and Lucas revealed the meaning behind the song, stating that it’s “about the world coming to an end.”

“Look up, open the clouds, here comes the bombshell,” the pair sing in harmony as Balthazar picks an acoustic guitar.

Watch the duo perform all four songs below, then tell us what you think in the comment section.
