Last Saturday night, singer/songwriter Mat Kearney, Aaron Gillespie (Underoath/the Almost), Bryce Avary (the Rocket Summer), Stephen Christian (Anberlin), Aaron Marsh (Copeland), and more gathered onstage in Orlando to cover Ben E. King’s 1961 classic “Stand By Me” — and they did it to fight suicide, addiction, and self cutting.
The occasion: Florida-based non-profit organization To Write Love on Her Arms’ annual Heavy and Light concert. Like last year — when a similar group of rockers covered the Beatles’ “A Little Help from My Friends” — the all-star cast (also including solo artists Zach Williams and Damion Suomi) took to the House of Blues’ stage, trading turns on the mic on a rough yet ultimately moving performance.
