Cool retro-soul records — namely from fair-haired dudes in what SPIN’s Charles Aaron dubbed the “White Soulboy Invasion”earlier this year — litter the record release calendars of late 2009 and early 2010.
But while these newcomers deserve some praise, let’s not sleep on one man who’s been refreshing classic R&B for a long, long time: Raphael Saadiq.
In his brand new video for “Staying in Love,” off The Way I See It (one of last year’s pleasant surprises), Saadiq pairs cleverly wrought graphics — think iPod ad meets Frank Miller’s semi-animated film Sin City — with the song’s timeless, Motown/Funk Brothers-style guitar hook. Watch below — it’s a totally addictive track!
