Chris Brown: “I’m Learning From My Mistakes”

Chris Brown sat down Wednesday with Angie Martinez of New York radio station Hot 97 for his second public interview since pleading guilty in June to assaulting Rihanna.

But unlike his troubled appearance on Larry King Live in September, the R&B singer didn’t fumble or retract his words and made himself clear: “I’m learning from my mistakes everyday and I regret it every second.”

Martinez was frank with Brown from the get-go: “There’s no way to start this without being awkward,” she said, before asking the singer how the public should feel about him. “Honestly, with me, it’s not a thing about how you should feel,” he said. “Just be human. Because at the end of the day, I’m human. Of course you’re gonna have your thoughts and opinions. I’m not gonna say they’re wrong. But at the end of the day, it’s not right to judge someone. People make mistakes all the time.” [Via MTV]

During the hour-plus interview, Brown also discussed the photos of a bruised Rihanna and those who reached out to support him following the pre-Grammy altercation — including Will Smith.

“As a young black man myself, I need older black male role models to step in and kind of mold me — not people bashing me, ’cause that’s not how you learn from mistakes,” Brown said of his relationship with the I Am Legend actor.

The singer did remain mum when questioned about what exactly happened in the car the night of the brawl, saying he wanted to protect Rihanna’s privacy, but did offer advice for young couples with anger issues. “I would say, point blank, definitely learn from my mistakes,” he said. “Learn from what you saw Chris Brown’s take on it was. If you’re young, everything isn’t as serious as it amounts to. I feel like people wanna grow up so fast and be adults. Just live your life and be you. If it’s physical, take some classes. Counseling is great. It doesn’t mean you’re crazy, you’re just working on you.”

The interview comes during a period of musical activity for both Brown and Rihanna. Brown recently dropped his first new music since the brawl, “I Can Transform Ya,” which is the first single from his upcoming album, Graffiti. Rihanna, meanwhile, recently released “Russian Roulette,” the first track from her November 23 full-length, Rated R.
