Yim Yames, ‘Tribute To’ (ATO)

After George Harrison’s death in November 2001, a grieving Jim James of My Morning Jacket recorded this small, sad tribute EP to the Quiet Beatle. The result is spare and somber — just that windy Americana tenor against a squeaky acoustic guitar. “Love You To,” the Fab Four’s first wisp of Eastern structure (from Revolver) is inflected with naked banjo in lieu of Harrison’s famed sitar, and his solo All Things Must Pass is sampled four times with elegiac deliberation, especially on the cathartic “My Sweet Lord.” Many of us remember where we were when Harrison died; now we hear when James began to heal.
