Drive-By Truckers, ‘The Fine Print (A Collection of Oddities and Rarities (2003-2009)’ (New West)

Cliché or not, Drive-By Truckers’ leftovers really are better than most bands’ main course. Comprised of a dozen scraps, the majority from the era of 2004’s The Dirty South, The Fine Print mixes originals, including two from the departed Jason Isbell, with inventive covers: Dylan’s “Like a Rolling Stone” gets a rousing party-anthem makeover, and Warren Zevon’s “Play It All Night Long” becomes an aching grunge lament. But Patterson Hood’s wicked wit generates the biggest charge, from the creepy-sleazy “Mrs. Claus’ Kimono” to “George Jones Talkin’ Cell Phone Blues,” a rueful drunk-driving saga.
