It’s possible that Stone Roses bassist Gary “Mani” Mounfield has finally convinced frontman Ian Brown the time is right for a full-on reunion!
UK tabloid The Mirror is reporting that the influential Manchester band are reuniting and that more than 21 shows have been planned for the UK, with a US date in the works — possibly the Coachella Valley Music and Arts Festival in April. The tour is said to coincide with the upcoming re-release of the band’s 1989 self-titled debut album. A band spokesperson was unavailable by press time.
“It’s taken a lot of time to get Ian to agree but he’s finally signed on the dotted line,” a source told the paper. “The rest of the band were really up for it, especially when they realized the amount of money on the table.”
But take the news with a grain of salt: Last year Brown, who is also planning a solo release for 2009, said the chances of a reunion happening were, “No chance…not in the next three lifetimes.” And NME.com reports the summer tour would conflict with guitarist John Squire’s art exhibits in Manchester, Austria, and Tokyo this summer.
And then there’s Coachella: The Stone Roses have yet to be announced as a performer (though acts are always added up to the last minute). Coachella reunions have a history of not coming to fruition, and even confirmed Coachella bands sometimes end up not performing.
