Though he’s known for fronting the original lineup of Saosin, going full force with his current band, Circa Survive, and acting as a member of supergroup side project the Sound of Animals Fighting, Anthony Green left the clever band names at home last night as he hit San Francisco’s Bottom of the Hill venue and strummed through cuts off his first solo album, Avalon, issued simply under his own given name.
Backed by a band of buddies (all members of Philadelphia’s Good Old War) and joined by Circa’s Brendan Ekstrom and Nick Beard, Green put on a laid back, intimate show filled with rousing acoustic rock’n’roll and sincere songwriting. Green’s quick witted stage banter nearly equaled the high entertainment value of standout tracks like set-opening rouser “Babygirl” and crowd sing-along “Drug Dealer” (WATCH). But no song befit Green’s vocal range and style better than “Devils Song (This Feels Like a Nightmare),” with its epic, mid-song rock out and concluding refrain of “we’re all in the same spot,” which the crowd fittingly piped in unison.
