Sigur Ros Unveil North American Tour

Who? Icelandic post-rockers Sigur Ros, which at the core comprises four members, though numerous others — including horn, string, and glockenspiel players — are added to flesh out the band’s ornate, transcendental tunes live. Sigur Ros’ latest album Með suð í eyrum við spilum endalaust (English: “With a Buzz in Our Ears We Play Endlessly”), the follow up to 2005’s Takk…, will drop stateside June 24.

What? A 17-date outing, set to roll out with a pair of gigs at New York City’s United Palace Theatre Sept. 17 & 18. From there, the band will hit Boston, leap north of the border for a pair of gigs, and stroll into U.S. cities like Detroit, Chicago, Minneapolis, Los Angeles, Portland, and Seattle before capping in Vancouver, BC Oct. 7.

Should I go? Absolutely. As the ethereal soundscapers illustrated at Bonnaroo ’08, their dopamine-bubbling tunes, highlighted by frontman Jón “Jónsi” Þór Birgisson ambient falsetto, fare excellent live especially when accompanied by strings and other classical instrumentation. And considering the venues on the bill — predominantly symphony theatres — Sigur Ros’ tour is not to be missed.
