New Video: Scarlett Johansson, “Falling Down (Live)”

scarlett-johansson.jpg

Indie-chic actress Scarlett Johansson’s dreamily bizarre collection of Tom Waits covers,Anywhere I Lay My Head, falls into record stores this week featuring contributions by David Bowie and TV on the Radio’s Dave Sitek, among others. To promote the record’s release, the starlet-turned-singer took her cover of Waits’ “Falling Down,” originally featured on 1988’s Big Time, to the cozy studios of AOL Sessions and Yahoo! Pepsi Smash for your possible viewing pleasure.

Although both videos feature Nashville-influenced instrumentation and Johansson’s husky voice, the visual presentation is what sets these videos apart from each other. The AOL Sessions recording presents Scarlett and her backing band in an appropriately Hollywood manner, complete with visual clarity and panning shots, while Yahoo’s video provides a more hazy, washed-out visual accompaniment as Johansson (literally) lets her hair down.Either way, the music — never mind the concept behind it — is singularly unique.Anywhere I Lay My Head is out now on Atco.
