News Roundup: Feist, White Stripes, Dr. Dog

Spin‘s Breakout of the Year, Feist, has beat out esteemed fellow nominees like Arcade Fire, LCD Soundsystem, M.I.A., Spoon, and Wilco to win the Shortlist Prize for her 2007 record, The Reminder. The prize, originally intended to recognize artists that have sold less than 500,000 records in the U.S. between January and November of each respective year, honors Feist despite her recent success, which pushed the sales of her honored LP just over the mark, to 515,000 copies sold. Bull battling White Stripes gunslinger Jack White is in trouble again, but this time it’s not for pounding in the face of a Von Bondie; “Jumble, Jumble,” a track from the duo’s sophomore set, 2000’s De Stijl, is at the center of a legal battle as Quebec radio host Dominique Payette sues the band, Third Man Records, and BMG Music Publishing Canada for $70,000 due to a sample within the song — a 10 second clip of an exchange of words in French — allegedly pulled from her radio show. What’s more is that Payette is seeking an injunction, which, if approved, would remove the album from store shelves, both digital and conventional. So, maybe this has been the source of drummer Meg White’s anxiety?

Roots rockin’ Philadelphia-based outfit Dr. Dog, a stand out at 2007’s Bonnaroo Music and Arts Festival, will open the vaults this spring with the release of Passed Away, a 10-track collection of rare tracks due March 4 via Park the Van. The tracks, lo-fi recordings spanning the band’s tenure, were originally offered as rough-edged streaming audio via the band’s website, but will now arrive remastered. A band statement gets straight to the point: “Passed Away is just Dr. Dog recording songs because that’s what they do, not for anyone but kind of for everyone at the same time.” Exactly.

Passed Away tracklisting:

1. “Oh Me Oh My”
2. “Going Home”
3. “The Man Who Was Wrong”
4. “I’m Standing In the Light”
5. “A Long Time Ago”
6. “Oh My God”
7. “Me and My Girl”
8. “Eyesing the Blues”
9. “Little Bird”
10. “Beer Can”
