Will Schwartz trades his usual guitar punk for a bedroom-techno interpretation of R&B pop without betraying his indie-rock heart. Sandwiched between partner Tomo Yasuda’s keyboard pings and bass pongs, the dance-minded flirt gets busy with topical references à la Missy Elliott, but frames them in bohemian San Francisco, forgoing consumer culture bling in favor of recycling bins and safety pins. What elevates this above a cheeky tribute is the unselfish sweetness that Schwartz mixes with his smarts. P.D.A. really feels like a public display of affection.
