Album Updates: DeVotchKa, Stephen Malkmus and the Jicks

Pushing forward in the ever-so-eclectic niche mixing Eastern European and Mexican folk with punk rock, Denver-based quartet DeVotchKa have announced the release of A Mad and Faithful Telling, the follow up to 2004’s How It Ends, and first album for new label Anti-, slated to arrive to store shelvesMarch 18. And in classic form, the new set will see the outfit employthe use of their diverse musical arsenal: “violin and hornarrangements” plus instruments like “sousaphones, upright bass, tuba, bouzouki, theremins, mariachi horns… accordions” will be featured ontunes with titles such as “Undone,” “Comrade Z,” and “Transliterator.”

Stephen Malkmus and the Jicks Reveal ‘Trash’ Tracklist

“Dragonfly Pie,” “Elmo Delmo,” and “Wicked Wanda”; Stephen Malkmus has unleashed a promising teaser of his word wizardry, set to arrive in full March 4 with Real Emotional Trash, the first taste of ol’ Malkmus since 2005’s solo outing Face the Truth, and latest record to feature the Jicks since 2003’s Pig Lib.And there’s so much more good stuff: “Hopscotch Willie,” “Gardenia,”and “Out of Reaches”? If the song titles are any indication, Real Emotional Trash will be an assorted, playful, and characteristically forthright endeavor.

As you may remember,Mr. Malkmus and crew’s forthcoming set was recorded by TJ Doherty(Sonic Youth, the Hold Steady) at SnowGhost Studios in Whitefish,Montana, and will be the first effort with new drummer Janet Weiss, formerly of Sleater-Kinney. And although no details have beenannounced, there’s still that tour of the U.S. that will be”co-in-side-ing” with the album’s release. [Via Pitchfork]
